Skoda Fabia (07 - 14)

This latest and second generation of the Fabia has been improved in nearly every department. Skoda have continued with the same formula that made the outgoing model so popular. The build quality has been significantly improved; it’s easier and better to drive, and it looks better. The cabin has been substantially improved; the materials look and feel much more upmarket, the quality of the spec is improved and road/wind noise has been reduced. Skoda’s reputation has gone up another notch with this – it is a really fine car now. It did particularly well in the Euro NCAP test. It is a lovely drive; solid and sporty and any Irish person who has owned one will tell you they love it. Parking it in tight spaces is not a problem because it is easily manoeuvred. The engine range has also been improved, with some efficient versions to choose from, including the eco-friendly Greenline.

Look out for

•  Complaints of leaking fuel pumps. Check their condition first

What we like

•  It’s an easy and fun little car to drive

•  There are some efficient versions, such as the Greenline

•  Price tag is quite reasonable. Cheap to keep on the road too

•  Surprisingly practical. Spacious cabin and boot

•  Skoda reliability shines through

What we don't like

•  Some parts of the interior look and feel a bit cheap
